Though the film industry loves to boast about the "pure" culture that made it all possible, The Flu has a sprinkling of Hollywood elements that help add realism to the film. Indeed, the film is a masterpiece, and a must see for all die-hard fans of the serie.
Five families live in two houses in the small village of Katherina, in the city of Bergamo, when a mysterious flu strikes the town. The Flu starts appearing among the people shortly after their arrival, attacking them from within and leaving them with very little time to prepare themselves before death. After an outbreak in one of the houses, all five families are left with just one house to live in while they try to survive.
The movie follows the lives of these families in many ways. In addition to showing how they have to deal with the flu, we get to see how each family reacts to the residents as well. By the end of the movie, it's clear that all five families are bound together through their difficult times. Watching how each family grows from each other, and how each member tries to do what he or she can for his or her family is not only heartwarming, but is also inspiring for anyone who is going through a tough time in life.
The Flu starts off with a very interesting idea: after a flu outbreak, what would happen if the flu was actually spread throughout the entire town? With this idea, it creates a scenario where only a few citizens have been infected, while the rest of the town has been spared.
The movie then follows the remaining citizens as they try to figure out how to maintain their lives and livelihood while the rest of the series is being forced to move into the same homes as them. It shows how these people cope with their fates, and it also explains how the virus spreads through the town.
Though The Flu is based on the original idea, it expands on the story in several ways. The new plot line that revolves around the epidemic is shown in a completely different way. Instead of just one family dealing with the hardship of being displaced, the film instead gives us a very intricate look at how five families were forced to live in two separate houses, while the rest of the town is relocating to new homes.
The movie is also funny, and the acting is top notch. The cast is full of very interesting characters, and it's always fun to watch each character react to situations differently. After watching so many movies that take their themes and characters from the series, it's nice to see a movie that's truly original, as The Flu is.
